The Space Between

In the last year and a half we have had to re-visit and re-consider how we do “connection”, something as vital to human beings as the air we breathe. We are curious to explore how this connection shifts something inside and outside of us. The Space Between welcomes you to an interactive canvas of possibilities, where shifts happen when we come in contact with an-other, where we can leave our imprint and add to the space that grows and transforms with each new connection made, leaving us with a subtle and at times powerful transformation inside and outside each time we share The Space between.
Three Brisbane-based artists, Greg Bantick, Tania Balil and John Rohrig, come together to host a 3 day community event that will present a variety of artistic modalities, including drawing, calligraphy, painting, ceramic sculpture, original music videos, live music, poetry, story telling, book and music launch, interactive installations, improvisation, multicultural food and more.
This is a train passing by… The more people on board the merrier!

As a collaboration between BSAF and Bad Olive, the exhibition will open in conjunction with the Festival Launch Party on May 1 at Superordinary, and will be open for public viewing throughout the festival period of May 1-16. Featuring paintings, photographs, drawings, sketches and mixed medium artworks, this exhibition will open your eyes to the rich and diverse talent that cultivate the current Brisbane Street Art scene.

All works will be available to purchase during opening night and public viewing times, so you can take home that eye-catching piece and support a local artist!

Festival Launch Party

The Festival Launch Party is an inclusive event that will see all three floors of our festival headquarters, Superordinary in Brisbane’s CBD, transformed into an eclectic and all-immersive mini-festival experience. Featuring the works of talented visual and multidisciplinary artists, musicians and performers from Brisbane’s arts community, our inner-city pop-up arts venue will come alive for a night of art, live performance and celebration.

The ground floor of our reclaimed office building will host a bar and live music from local favourites APEman x KMAY, Endless Valley, Old Home, The Jensens as well as a stellar performance from Voices of Colour.

The first floor will feature the innovative project ‘Submerged’: an immersive multimedia and audio-visual experience that emcompases surround sound, projection, audio-reactive visual synthesis and electroacoustics to create new and exciting spectacles for audiences that synchronise feeling across multiple senses.

The second floor will showcase the opening of the large scale exhibition, ‘Within These Walls’: a collaboration between BSAF and Bad Olive that will feature installations, paintings, photographs, drawings, sketches and mixed medium artworks by local street artists and artists with connections to the Brisbane Street Art scene.

Come along and experience the best that Brisbane’s rich and diverse art scene has to offer and celebrate the launch of BSAF 2021! Tickets available to purchase at the door or via Eventbrite.

Street Art Cycling Tour

BSAF will once again host Street Art Cycling Tours so you can easily catch all the latest and greatest murals around Brisbane. Led by a member of the BSAF team, the mobile audience will journey through the CBD, West End, Fortitude Valley and wider, exploring artworks from BSAF 2020 and past years. Winding along the river and Brisbane’s beautiful bicycle paths, the guide will give you insight into the artists behind the murals and how the works came to life.

Art Has No Gender

BSAF is committed to providing a platform for a diversity of artists and support minorities to express themselves within the industry. Art Has No Gender is an opportunity to engage with female or non-binary identifying artists, producers, performers and all round creatives in an afternoon of conversation.
From 3pm, we encourage you to join in a discussion with local powerhouse female identifying and non-binary creatives who, despite breaking boundaries and enjoying widespread success, face unique experiences and challenges within the industry. Then, enjoy a few drinks and get to know your fellow professionals and hobbyists alike to the backdrop of our resident DJ.

Scribble Slam

Watch as two street artists go head-to-head to create a large wall artwork in just 90 minutes! The battling artists can use whichever medium they like to create their unique artwork – but there’s a twist – they must respond to a mystery theme given to them just before the timer begins!
The iconic art battle will be hosted twice in Brisbane during the festival, first at Ric’s Backyard on May 3 and then at Toombul Centre’s newest precinct on May 15. Each night will be accompanied by the sweet beats of our resident DJ and half-time sessions from Brisbane’s underground musos. Join the diverse crowd of spectators, vote for your favourite to win, and gain a unique perspective into these artists’ creative processes. Check out our website for each night’s line-up of talented guest artists and exciting performers.

Festival Launch Party

The BSAF Launch Party will celebrate transformation and collaboration as we open up our CBD festival hub, Superordinary, to the world. Our inner city pop-up arts venue will alight with the energy of the Brisbane arts community as visual artists, musicians and performers come together to create an experience to delight the senses.
Artworks and installations from ‘Within These Walls’ will wind through the staircase of our multi-story experience, guiding you from the venue beneath to the exhibition atop. Swing by the bar on the ground floor and catch some of Brisbane’s hottest up and coming bands, have a boogie at the electronic stage, check out some live virtual graffiti with Kingspray, and be enticed by eclectic roving performances throughout the building. For the night, Superordinary is yours to enjoy.
The Festival Launch Party is a chance to celebrate. BSAF’s desire to showcase the public art and street art culture of Brisbane in 2020 is keener than ever, as we take on more walls with more artists than ever before. Come and play a part in the future of Brisbane art.
