TOOLS OF THE TRADE EXHIBITION

In mid-2021 renowned Hong Kong street art festival organisation HKwalls launched ‘Tools of the Trade’, an intimate insight into the historically hidden world of graffiti and street art. This year, BSAF is proud to be collaborating with HKwalls in the first international exhibit of ‘Tools of the Trade’, here at Brisbane’s Superordinary Northshore, which will run for the duration of the festival’s two-week program.

‘Tools of the Trade’ documents the tools, traditions, and techniques that have facilitated the works of street artists for the last seventy years. From early stencils and spray cans to the introduction and integration of complex and modern technology, this exhibition offers up a rare and incredibly diverse glimpse into the practical demands of street art.

HOUSE OF IRIS X BSAF

BSAF are thrilled to welcome House of Iris into the 2022 program, with their latest exhibition available to the public for the duration of the festival at our Superordinary Northshore venue, launching on Saturday May 7th.

House of Iris launched in 2021 as a photography event curated by renowned Brisbane-based photographers Macami and Luis Campbell. While both curators have achieved broad success and recognition within the industry, the two really bookend the industry style-wise, with Macami’s distinctive crisp neon studio look, and Luis Campbell’s softer earthy analogue work. With such drastically oppositional creative lenses through which to view the industry, the two have a unique and diverse curatorial approach, making the ‘House of Iris’ event a gorgeously broad and inclusive look at Brisbane’s established and emerging photographers.

THE GO SHOW

‘The Go Show’ is a theatre performance created to exhibit the many struggles and triumphs of an enduring graffiti writer. Presented at a hidden outdoor location, the show takes form in the autobiographical narration of a graffiti writer addressing the mental conflicts that develop with doing this illegal art form. With captivating stage play, and the use of true archival image and video projections, the show becomes a mixture of fiction and documentary with different narrative levels.

THE CROWN AND THE QUIVR 2.0

The Princess Theatre is Brisbane’s newest, oldest music and arts space situated in the heart of Woolloongabba. After its recent facelift and relaunch late last year, The Princess is ready to showcase some of Brisbane’s best music in the midst of brilliant art on the walls of the neighbouring laneway.

Featuring pieces completed as part of BSAF 2021 from Muchos, Camille Manley, Birrunga Wiradyuri, Kane Brunjes and Stevie O’Chin, plus live sets from The House That Jazz Built, Kuzco, DJ Sweaty Baby, Dameeeela and Luke Brazier, The Crown & The QUIVR 2.0 is part of Radical Habitat, a series of free, all-ages events in autumn presented by The Princess Theatre and QUIVR, with support from Brisbane City Council.

Elements Collective Battle Night FT. Scribble Slam

One of Brisbane’s most iconic creative spaces Elements Collective & EC Venue are set to host a night celebrating all things street culture on Saturday 14th May 2022.

Featuring some of Brisbane’s best hip-hop talent the event will showcase a Bonnie & Clyde All-styles Dance Battle, Street culture art & photo exhibitions, Hip-hop DJ’s and a Scribble Slam hosted by the Brisbane Street Arts Festival (BSAF) crew.

Held across EC’s newly renovated ground floor venue, it’s the perfect place to chill back and experience Brisbane’s street art and culture in all its elements.

This is an 18+ event.

23rd Key

Jess began creating work in 2005, first exhibiting her work in 2008, and has spent most of her time toiling over a table ever since. Under the pseudonym 23rd Key, she creates photo-realistic stencils and hand-painted works, taking no shortcuts and cutting all her stencils by hand. With a background in Printmaking, Graphic Design, Audio Engineering and Architecture, she brings this knowledge into her work and in recent years has adapted to installing and hand painting large-scale mural works without the use of stencils.

Aleja Hine

Aleja is a visual/street artist, creative director and curator based in Meanjin. In her studio she is primarily an oil painter, however uses mixed media such as acrylic and aerosol on canvas. Her style involves a form of realistic composite art with enhanced and abstracted colours, drawing from the ideas and style of surrealism. She plays between the boundaries of traditional and digital art. Using traditional realism juxtaposed against bold block imagery in thought provoking ways to depict modern ideals of beauty aesthetics, sexual freedom and fluidity. Her work largely focuses on depicting women in unique ways to tell stories about the world.

BSAF X FELONS PARTY

Join the BSAF artists and community at Brisbane’s iconic riverside venue, Felons, to kick off the final weekend of BSAF 2022. On Friday 20th May, BSAF will transform Felons’ Barrel Hall into a divine collaboration of visual and sonic pleasure, featuring the music and artworks of our incredible local creative scene. Also making a return on the night is Scribble Slam, an immersive and ephemeral art battle between two of the festival’s incredible artists, where you as the public get to choose who wins. Also an opportunity to try the official BSAF 2022 beer, designed and developed by the one and only Sofles.

LINE UP

Dream Coast

Dream Coast is an analogue electronic-music visual project with a focus on creating emotive synth soundscapes.

Ethan Greaves

Audio-visual entrepreneur and architect of frequency and emotion, Ethan Greaves will perform a collection of deep and groove-laden textural featurettes designed to make hearts beat and bodies move.

Hannah Macklin

Vocally virtuosic and compositionally kaleidoscopic, Hannah Macklin’s sound ranges from moments of gentle introspection to raucous metal-tinged mayhem and invites R&B, jazz and punk influences into a progressive pop rock context, allowing Hannah’s trademark voice to lead the adventures.

Liz Young- Aerial Violinist

Liz Young began playing the violin at the age of 7 and since then has been a part of many projects such as the Brisbane’s Sanctuary String Quartet, the Rock Orchestra Deep Blue and the Mendoza tango Quartet. Liz will be presenting an Aerial Violin performance.

Mad Mariachi

The Mad Mariachi brings the unmistakable flavour and flair of a traditional Mexican Mariachi band to contemporary and diverse crowds across Australia.

Phil Smart

Phil has been a fixture on the Australian electronic music scene for over 30 years and is renowned for playing fresh sounds and forward thinking electronic music. Co-founder of record labels Think and Thunk, he’s also released original material and remixes under various guises on labels like Motorik, Junkbeats and Future Classic.

Pill Testing

Duo Phill Thomson (Nam Shub of Enki/Monster Zoku Onsomb) & James Bullen (Sonic Acid) will bring their raw techno slammers and full-bore rave epics to their BSAF x Felons set, firing bolts of electricity through body.

UQ Taiko

UQ Taiko was established with the team concept of 「みんなの太鼓」which in Japanese means, “Taiko drumming for anyone and everyone!” The team endeavours to share this beautiful and powerful music, art and culture of traditional Japanese taiko drumming with the wider community.

Alex Sugar

Alex Sugar is a Perth-born artist currently based in Melbourne who has been passionate about drawing Alex Sugar is well-known for his realism in painting native flora and fauna in conjunction with objects that consider the concept of time and place. He draws these elements together with a slightly surreal twist and complimentary colour palettes.
