EXHIBITIONS

A photographic survey of Brisbane graffiti from 1984 -1994.

The first generation of graffiti artists in Brisbane were raised in the 1970’s & 1980’s absorbed in North American popular culture.

Movies like, “Flashdance, Paramount Pictures, 1983”, and “Beat Street, Orion Pictures, 1984”, burst onto cinema screens revealing the previously unseen cultures of breakdancing, rap music and subway graffiti from New York City. These films fueled the creation of a localised, “Hip Hop” movement. Groups of young people formed break dancing crews and began mimicking the masterpieces displayed in the movies.
